Route 31-32

Bogense - Hasmark - Odense

Total distance: 54.5 km
42.5 km tarmaced road  12 km unsurfaced roads.

Bogense

Route 31-32: Bogense-Enebærodde Route 31-32: Bogense-Enebærodde
There are a number of old houses well worth seeing in Bogense, the smallest market town on Fyn. The medieval market square is flanked by small trees and squat houses with picturesque facades. The small 'Manneken Pis' statue is a copy of the Brussels landmark, presented to the town by a local inhabitant who was an orphan himself.

As soon as you have left Bogense you meet open countryside. In the areas of reclaimed land you see drainage canals and old windmill pumps at various points.

Gyldensteen

Billede
Gyldensten was established in the medieval period under the name Enggård. The present-day Gyldensten buildings date from the 17th century. The farm buildings have unfortunately burnt down, but two gatehouses still exist. From 1720 onwards the manor house was the main residence of count Gyldensten and his family, with no less that 301 copy-hold farms belonging to the county.

Passing through a small area of woodland you arrive at Sandagergård Manor, which dates right back to the 14th century. The two wings of the main building lie behind imposing thatched farm buildings from the 17th century.

Hasmark Strand

Billede
Hasmark Strand is a long level stretch of coast and one of the best beaches for bathing on Fyn. At the rear of the beach there is a dike, behind which there is a large open recreational area and many charming holiday homes.

Enebærodde

Route 31-32: Enebærodde-Odense Route 31-32: Enebærodde-Odense
The route continues to Enebærodde. From here in the summer months there are boat trips on board the "Svanen" across the fjord to Lodshuse on Hindsholm. (Check the sailing times, the tourist bureau in Kerteminde can provide information). Otherwise, please take note that the whole section of the route at Enebærodde is gravel.

Enebærodde is a former area of common land, the only place on Fyn where you can find large expanses of moorland vegetation, such as juniper, ling, heather and crow-berry. Its fauna includes adders, grass snakes and sand lizards. Conifers have been planted in part of the area. The spit consists of beach ridges, forming a narrow pebble beach on the Kattegat side, but with a coast of salt meadows and reed swamps on the Odense Fjord side. This area of shallows is an important resting place for duck and wading birds.

At the entrance to Enebærodde there is a path to the manor house of Hoffmansgave. Its yellow-washed wings are a picturesque, harmonious example of 18th century architecture. The gardens contain exotic trees from all over the world, with their names clearly marked. Continue your trip past the farm buildings of the manor house and climb onto the dike, from where there is a commanding view of the shallow waters of the fjord. To the west of you lies Fjordmarken - an area of reclaimed land of considerable botanical interest, with orchids and other rare plants.

Odense Fjord

Billede
Originally there were around 30 islets in Odense Fjord, but now only eight remain. The fjord is an important resting place for migratory birds, as well as being a breeding ground for such birds as gulls, terns, herons, eiders and mute swans.

From Klintebjerg you can see the largest island on the fjord, Viggelsø. There is a nature school on the island which the public can sail out to during the summer months. Viggelsø is part of a nature recovery project that aims at ensuring a rich birdlife. There are trips in the summer months on board the "Svanen" from Klintebjerg to Enebærodde and Hindsholm (east of the fjord), which can make a very agreeable break in your cycling itinerary.

Cycle from Gudskov along the dike to Stige, then follow the 7 km long Odense Canal tpwards the city centre. At Næsbyhoved Skov there are interesting medieval castle mounds. It was a royal castle and seigneurial residence until Næsbyhoved Castle was destroyed during the Count's Feud in 1534, after which it was used as a stone quarry by the town's inhabitants. There are no signs of the castle ruins left today. Until c. 1870 the castle was surrounded by the now drained lake of Næsbyhoved Sø.
