Route 35

Odense - bogense

Total distance: 35.5 km of tarmaced road.

Odense

Route 35: Odense - Skamby Route 35: Odense - Skamby
Odense can be traced back to the time of the Vikings, when there was a ring fortification down by the river. At the end of the 18th century, Odense was Denmark's largest city outside Copenhagen. The "capital" of Fyn offers many attractions and lots of entertainment. The Tourist Bureau can give you lots of information about these, and places to stay.

Odense airport is at Beldringe, east of route 35 and is the largest airport on Fyn. However, since the opening of the Great Belt Bridge in 1997/8 it has lost some of its importance, as with the new road and rail link it is only an hour and a half to Copenhagen. At Beldringe there is a historical centre, housed in a World War Two bunker. The museum has displays about the air war over Fyn and the Home Guard. (Note the opening times are restricted - information available from Otterup Tourist Bureau, tel: +45 6482 3200.

Dallund Slot

Billede
Follow the Søhus path towards the village of Allesø. Just outside the village, about 1 km from the road, lies the castle of Dallund Slot. The estate was established in the middle ages and is one of the largest on Fyn The present-day main building is an impressive, Gothic-style structure with a stair turret and spire dating from around 1540, as well as a number of more recent extensions. You can walk around the lake and observe many species of birds, such as grebes, coots, reed and sedge warblers, and nightingales. Dallund Slot is now a rest home. Just before you come to Stensby you pass a monument commemorating Baron Blixen-Finicke.

The tenant farmers of Dallund put up the monument when they became freeholders in 1852. The inscription is brief and to the point: "He kept his word". There are other inscriptions to be found in a Stensby garden. In a corner of this garden a family had the strange idea of setting up a row of stones with verses of poetry engraved on them. They seem to illustrate the theme of the necessity of taking a break from the hurly-burly of daily life.

Glavendruplunden

Route 35: Skamby-Bogense Route 35: Skamby-Bogense
In this grove there is a runic stone with Denmark's longest inscription. The stone is part of an unusually large stone tumulus from the Viking period. It has been raised on top of a bronze-age burial place. There are several monuments commemorating historic events such as the liberation of Denmark in 1945. In this country meetings have been held in the grove on Denmark's Constitution Day. There is a tourist information board on the site.

Skamby Church

Billede
On your way to Skamby you have the chance of studying a bronze-age tumulus. Here too there is a tourist information board. If it is open, it is worth looking inside Skamby Church, which contains a picture of the Last Supper. In one of the transepts there is a magnificent chair. People in the parish claim that these items were brought to the church from Dallund Castle in connection with a religious service attended by His Majesty King Frederik VII.

In the section of the route around Kragelund Møllebæk the remains of Grindløse Ridge can be seen, unfortunately seriously disfigured as a result of having been used as a gravel pit. You are now on the road that takes you to two large North-Fyn manor houses, Sandagergård and Gyldensten. Shortly after Gyldensten there is a path to the right leading to the lovely mill Stegø Mølle, which was restored after a fire in 1974.

Bogense

Billede
There are a number of old houses well worth seeing in Bogense, the smallest market town on Fyn. The medieval market square is flanked by small trees and squat houses with picturesque facades. The small 'Manneken Pis' statue is a copy of the Brussels landmark, presented to the town by a local inhabitant who was an orphan himself.
