Route 41-42

Kerteminde - Korshavn - Kerteminde

Total Distance 55.5 km
52,75 km on tarmaced roads and 2.75 km unsurfaced roads.

Kerteminde

Rute 41+42; Kerteminde - Korshavn Rute 41+42; Kerteminde - Korshavn
Cycle from Kerteminde towards Hverringe manor house. This three-winged Baroque castle is from 1790 and is surrounded by a moat. East of the main building lie conservation areas consisting of lovely countryside with stone walls, hedgerows of pollarded poplars and single trees standing out in the fields which change to salt meadows and beach ridges as you approach the coast.

The original village plan of Måle has remained unspoiled, with many well-preserved half-timbered houses and farms. Take the time to detour to the old restored windmill in Viby. Like many other mills, it is in beautiful countryside and has good views.

Continue to the beach at Bøgebjerg Strand, you can see a beach ridge landscape called Bjørnens Krat. The coastline is broken by a number of woodland areas where migrating predatory birds can be seen during the spring.

Unfortunately the trip from Martofte to Fyns Hoved is not very comfortable cycling. There can be heavy car traffic in both directions as this is the only road to Fyns Hoved. Fyns Hoved is a very special location with lovely countryside and excellent views over land and sea. Please note, though, that the last couple of kilometres up to the point are not suitable for cycling.

If you do decide to continue north from Martofte, you soon reach Mårhøj, which contains the largest single-chamber passage grave on Fyn.
After a 7-metre-long passage there is a 10-metre-long burial chamber about the height of a man and with 7 cover stones. The passage grave was built by peasants around 3000 BC.

Cycling northwards from 'Mårhøj' to Fyns Hoved you follow the 'backbone' of the peninsula, with magnificent views out across the Great Belt and the many small islands and inlets of Lillestand. The whole of the northern part of Hindsholm is an important locality for breeding birds. It is, for example, the only breeding ground for black guillemots anywhere in Denmark. It is also a resting place for many migratory birds, such as razorbills, divers and grebes.

Fyns Hoved is a hilly beach ridge with a steep erosion coastline to the west and gentle smooth coastline to the east. The highest point is Baesbanke (which the locals just call "the head"). The northern part of Hindsholm is one of the areas of least precipitation in Denmark. This fact is mirrored by the many species of plants and insects to be found here that like warm weather and can tolerate low rainfall. If you are lucky, you can see seals and porpoises in the Kattegat. It is also an important area for migratory birds, especially in the spring.

Returning from Fyns Hoved to Martofte on route 41, turn west onto route 42. There is, however, an alternative marked on the map, the path (mostly gravel) Martofte to Mesinge. The path follows the old track of the Drigstrup-Mesinge-Martofte railway. One of the attractions of route 42 is that it runs along the water part of the way. Many people will also enjoy the fact that it runs through "no-man's land" far away from cars.
