Nyborg
Nyborg, seat of the national assembly in the 12th-15th century, is the starting point of this trip. If you are interested in Danish history, the town has much to offer. The oldest parts of the castle, Nyborg Slot, date as far back as c. 1170, though many alternations have since taken place. The town also has a number of medieval buildings such as 'Korsbrødregården' and 'Mads Lerches Gård', now a museum.
The takes you past the Holckenhavn Fjord, where Great Belt cuts almost two kilometres inland. Here there is a rich population of various types of web-footed birds.

Holckenhavn
The main building was erected in 1585 in the Renaissance style and is surrounded by a moat. Apart from the impressive square bell tower there is an adjoining castle chapel, build in 1630. The castle grounds are open to the public at certain times.
Consider taking a detour to the south in Tårup to the Kongshøj Mølle mill - an excellent place for a break. It has the highest mill pond on Fyn, at 7 metres. The mill was established in the 1850s and was very unusual for its time. It produced agricultural tools. At the time it was called Kongshøj Hammerværk (hammer mill), compare the hammer mill at Brahetrolleborg. (see route 51)
Return to the route by cycling about a kilometre south and then eastwards on Øksendrupvej.
Damestenen ("The Lady Stone") is a gneiss boulder weighing approximately 1,000 tons between Vormark and Hesselager. Christian VIII dug up Dammestenen in 1845 to try and find out whether it was a bedrock. After the excavation he declared it a conservation object, one of the largest in the country. There is an excellent view from the boulder.

Hesselagergård
The church of Hesselager is noted for its semicircular gables. This same feature is also found at the manor house of Hesselagergård. Stop off here to get a closer look at the unusual manor house.
The main building is from the 16th century and, architecturally speaking, is a blend of a medieval fortification and a Renaissance building with Italian feel to it. At the point where the public is not allowed past, there is a tourist information board that outline the history of the manor house.

Lundeborg
Lundeborg is a small fishing hamlet. The idyllic harbour was one a port and fishing harbour for the Broholm estate. The well-preserved warehouse there, dating from1862, is a heritage building. Nowadays the harbour is mainly a haven for pleasure craft. In Lundeborg and the surrounding area many interesting archaeological finds from the Roman and Germanic Iron Age (200-800 AD) have been made in recent years. These include a trading site, many burial and dwelling finds - and even gold finds. From them it can be deduced that the area was once an important religious, cultural and trading centre. The finds at Gudme include Scandinavia's largest iron age-house "Kongsgaard", possibly the residence of an iron-age chieftain.
Slightly south of Lundeborg lies the fishing town's church, which is only about a century old. It was originally build as a prayer house and the small tower is a later addition. You also pass an old half-timbered structure, Knarreborg Mølle, opposite which the remains of the original water mill can still be seen. From the beach at Elsehoved Strand, a leisure area with pine trees leading down to an inviting beach and a fine view across to Langeland. A little to the south-west of Elsehoved is the manor house of Tiselholt, built in the 1400s. The main building is somewhat more recent, only around 125 years old.
On the coastal stretch down towards Svendborg, where orchards are the distinctive feature of the countryside, there are beautiful views of the Great Belt and Skaarupøre Sund at a number of points. You cycle through a couple of villages, with the view of the sound gradually becoming dominated by the almost horseshoe shaped island of Thurø which, with its maritime traditions and the varied scenery, is absolutely worth a visit.

Svendborg
Close to Svendborg lies Christiansminde, a park like area open to the public where there is an old water mill. The bathing is excellent here and there is a fine view of the offshore islands.
Svendborg is the largest country town in South Fyn. It has most of the archipelago as its hinterland and a history that goes back to the 13th century. Today, Svendborg is a dynamic commercial and cultural town that, apart from the offshore islands and the yachting environment, has a number of attractions, including the museums of "Anne Hvides Gård", "Viebæltegård" and "Naturama".
