In many cases the buildings themselves are part of history - in others one has to explore inside. There is everything from dungeons, weapons and tools to glass, jewellery, silverware, maritime subjects and crafts. There are also many historical remains in the countryside of Fyn, and many antiquities have been found, dating from Viking times and the Stone Age, including the only preserved Viking ship burial site. There are finds from excavations in Odense and Svendborg, the last including an Iron Age site at Lundeborg. Throughout the countryside you can still see well-preserved, old half-timbered houses. To see how people actually lived in years gone by, visit the open-air museum. In the Fyn Village you can watch the farmers and craftsmen at work. There are harvest festivals and sheep fairs at Hjemstavnsgård in Vestfyn. On Tåsinge you can visit the Captain's House and Popular Collection, where you can see ropes being made and find out about the tragic story of Elvira Madigan.
