Tips & Ideas

  • When planning your visit to Fyn, Langeland and Ærø, it is important to order the maps and brochures in good time from the tourist bureaus in the areas you wish to see.
  • Try to plan your daily distances so that most of the trip follows the marked routes. This means you can be sure to avoid dangerous traffic and get the most from your holiday. Plan the route on the basis of the ability of the weakest in the group. For most adults and teenagers, 30 - 40 km per day is a suitable daily distance and allows time for breaks and any unexpected repairs. Keep in mind that the predominant wind is from the west.
  • Book accommodation in advance. Youth hostels, campsites, inns and hotels may be fully booked in the peak season.
  • If you are planning to bring your bicycle, it is a good idea to give it a thorough service before leaving. Tightening the spokes and putting in new inner tubes can save a lot of annoyances later. The brakes should be perfectly adjusted to allow for the extra weight of luggage, and a larger chain wheel might make it easier to climb the "Fyn Alps". You might choose to hire a bicycle here instead. Order in advance, and make it clear exactly what you intend to use the bicycle for.

Packing

  • Limit your luggage to 10 - 15 kg packed in low panniers. Divide it up between two or four bags, and line them with plastic bags. Do not cycle with a rucksack! A handlebar bag is useful for valuables and maps.
  • As well as your personal items, do not forget:: pump, puncture repair kit, extra inner tube(s), a cable lock, Allen keys, adjustable wrench, screwdriver, sun creme, a cycle helmet, a first aid kit, rainwear, cable bindings, cord, insulation tape and water bottle(s).

Tips for the trip

  • Take a practice trip, fully laden, some weeks before the holiday to test the bicycles and the fitness of the participants (especially the children).
  • Fully inflated tyres rarely puncture and roll more easily.
  • Wear several thin layers of clothing rather than one thick garment. Take a sweater off before you get hot, and put one on before you get cold.
  • Listen to the weather forecast each day before setting out. Danmarks Radio P3 is at FM 92.6 MHz There is a broadcast in English at 8.30. Alternatively, the Danish Meteorological Institute provides an English-language service.
  • Eat little but often. Drink lots of water.
  • Let the weakest dictate the pace. Take lots of short breaks. Cycle at a deliberately slow speed for the first hour.
  • Do not make a tight schedule, consciously attempt to keep everyone in good spirits and do not forget to enjoy it!
