Route 79

Langesø - Glamsbjerg - Ørbæk

Total distance: 113 km

110 km on tarmaced roads and 3 km gravel path

Langesø

Route 79: Langesø-Frøbjerg Route 79: Langesø-Frøbjerg
Forestry does not only include Danish deciduous trees, but also foreign - especially American - conifers. Almost 100 new breeds were imported and planted in the woods of the estate about a century ago. This experiment was a great success. Today there are many big trees here, including Oregon pine, sitka spruce, giant spruce and California giant sequoia. The castle is situated down by the lake, a three-winged neo-classicist building from the late-18th century. There is information obtainable at the castle, and a folder has been published with nature trails in the woods.

Vissenbjerg

The area around Vissenbjerg, especially south of the town, is of geological interest. The landscape seems nowadays to consist of three plateaus, with Vissenbjerg at the highest, hilly region. A folder describes in detail the geological phases which have given rise to the special structure of the area. At 'Udsigten' ('The Viewing Point') Brænde river valley lies below you, and you can see Frøbjerg Banker in the distance. Many inhabitants of Vissenbjerg have, on account of the stone-free clay and large bog areas, made their living from digging peat, firing bricks and manufacturing clay vessels. 'Afgrunden' ('The Abyss') is another place worth visiting, where a deep V-shaped ravine formed by melt water cuts through the woods.
The Terrarium in Vissenbjerg is a popular attraction, with its large collection of reptiles and frogs from all continents. The next section of the route takes you past Frøbjerg Banker (see route 75) and the manor house of Krengerup (see route 75).

Vestfyns Hjemstavnsgård

Route 79: Frøbjerg-Håstrup Route 79: Frøbjerg-Håstrup
The four-winged half-timbered farm of Landmålergården lies in the middle of the village of Gummerup and has been converted into a museum of the local area. Vestfyns Hjemstavnsgård illustrates Fyn agricultural life in the mid 18th century. The central farmhouse, from 1826, has interiors with household goods and domestic utensils, while the wings contain old agricultural tools and implements. The farm lies in an idyllic old garden and gives a vivid impression of how former generations of Danes used to live.

Lærkedal is state-owned woodland and nature area, and is open to the public. Paths lead you to the vantage point of Synebjerg, which is 82 metres above sea level. There is a tourist information board. You are now in an area that has a view right across to Svanninge Bakker. Long lilac hedgerows are typical of the area. Woodland and two adjoining manor houses are the main features of the countryside on the road to Håstrup.
You can make a detour just after Håstrup to Østrupgård and the mill of Trente Mølle. Østrupgård is a manor house estate with impressive thatched, half-timbered buildings dating from the 1700s.
Unfortunately the hurricane in December 1999 caused considerable damage to the outbuildings.
Trente Mølle has been converted into an open-air farm centre and nature school that offers overnight accommodation and a number of facilities. Within a few hundred metres you can see wind turbines, water mills and a mill race.

Sollerup Skov

The route continues through the woods of Gammelskov and Sollerup Skov. There are marked trails, with a path to the largest lake on Fyn, Arreskov Sø. Just south of Sollerup woods lie the hills of Svanning Bakke (see route 60), where there are also marked trails through an area of botanical interest. Ask for a folder of these to areas and give yourself plenty of time to enjoy them.

Brændegård Sø

Route 79: Håstrup-Skjoldemose Route 79: Håstrup-Skjoldemose
This lake has Scandinavia's largest breeding colony of cormorants.
This bird, also referred to as 'eel collar', was once virtually extinct and did not start breeding again on Fyn until the early 1970s. In 1991 the colony near Brændegård Sø was estimated to consist of about 6,900 couples - making it the largest in the country. Especially during the winter, the lake accommodates many species of web-footed birds, including greylag, duck and grebe. The lake has a tourist information board.

The manor house of Skjoldemose is situated on the edge of the hills of Egebjerg Bakker (see route 55) and has a relatively simple main building with sweeping gables. It was built in 1662. The farm buildings are mainly of granite, rebuilt during the last century.

Glorup

Route 79: Egebjerg Bakker-Ørbæk Route 79: Egebjerg Bakker-Ørbæk
There are many small lakes and marshland areas near Kirkeby, the result of clay pits, as the area is naturally suited for the brick-making industry.

During recent years so many finds from the Iron Age have been made near Gudbjerg og Gudme that they have aroused both national and international interest (see route 50). Sites of important finds are marked by tourist information boards.

The large gardens around the manor house of Glorup are open to visitors. Both French and English gardens are represented in this parkland area which covers an area of some 40 ha. It contains many rare trees and many statues, as well as a small love temple.

Kongshøj Å is a clean river, as its teeming fauna bears witness to. It has supplied water power to a number of mills, such as Kongshøj Mill (see route 50), which used to be a hammer mill and is north east of Glorup.
