Tranekær

The first striking feature you notice in Tranekær is the well-preserved old houses. The castle of Tranekær Slot is an impressive L-shaped red building with a dominating position. The history of the castle goes back to the 13th century, when it was a royal fortification. The castle has been altered a number of times, most recently in 1860, when the octagonal tower was added. In parts of the castle the walls are still three metres thick. It is surrounded by a large area of parkland, open to the public. On the nature trail round the castle lake there are many different species of trees from various parts of the world.
At Tranekær Slotsmuseum there are exhibitions about the castle, as well as a copy of the baronial hall. This fascinating little museum also focuses on the art of gardening on Langeland.

Slotsmøllen

Route 80-81: Slotsmøllen - Lohals Route 80-81: Slotsmøllen - Lohals
Just north of Tranekær lies Slotsmøllen (The Castle Mill), a well-preserved Dutch windmill from 1845. It houses a museum illustrating the history of mills on Langeland. Much money has been investigated in modern turbines on Langeland. At Tressebølle you can gaze out across a veritable 'forest' of new mills. So Langeland will continue to live up to its name as "The Land of Windmills".

Lohals & Stengade Skov

Before entering Lohals a visit to Tom Knudsens Safarimuseum is recommended. Here there is an exhibition of hunting trophies from several continents, as well as ethnographic items.

Lohals is an attractive coastal town, where the ferry route and harbour still play an important role.

There are a number of paths leading down to the coast, with beech trees sometimes growing right down to the water's edge. It was here that the Danish writer Oehlenschläger found inspiration for his text to the Danish national anthem "Der er et yndigt land" ("There is a pleasant land"). In the northern part of the area lies an old entrenchment from the wars against the English.
In the street of Stengade you will also find Tobaksladen , the Tobacco Shed, where there is an exhibition about the history of growing tobacco.
