Route 82-83

Rukøbing - Bagenkop - Spodsbjerg

Total distance 72 km
69,25 km on tarmaced road and 2.75 km gravel path

Skovsgaard

Route 82-83: Rudkøbing-Hennetved Route 82-83: Rudkøbing-Hennetved
From Rudkøbing (see route 8) you ride through several small villages before coming to Skovsgaard. This manor house, the main building of which dates from 1889, is owned by Danmarks Naturfond (the Danish National Trust Organisation). It is the largest organic farm in the country and visitors are allowed to see it in action. There are a number of attractions here, including an exhibition of old horse-drawn carriages and a forestry museum.

The village of Humble lies in the most hilly part of Langeland. The church can be seen from a considerable distance and opposite it lies one of the most impressive of Langeland's ancient monuments, "Kong Humbles Grav". The size of the passage grave seems to indicate that a chieftain from the Neolithic age was buried here.

You pass another fine passage grave on your way to Kinderballe. It is possible to cycle out from the hilly countryside of Kinderballe, with its typical Langeland "hat-shaped hills", to the cove of Tryggelev Nor. The area is a nature reserve, unique for its variation of lakes, reed swamps, meadows, fields, scrub and beaches. This provides a fine habitat for a rich and varied bird life, including the bearded titmouse. There are about 30 species which breed here.

Gulstav Skov og Gulstav Mose

Route 82-83: Hennetved-Bagenkop Route 82-83: Hennetved-Bagenkop
The woods of Gulstav Skov are managed using the coppice method, the oldest known form of forestry. It consists of cutting down trees at 10 to 20 year intervals, allowing the trees to produce new shoots from their stumps. These can then be used for hedges at field boundaries, fuel or as pound nets/eel traps.
On Langeland this type of woodland is also referred to as "stump gardens". It allows plenty of light to penetrate, resulting in a special flora and fauna. There is a nature trail round the southern tip of Langeland. This takes you round the cliff of Dovnsklint, a 16-metre-high hat-shaped hill which the sea has formed into a cliff-face.

Between the two areas of woodland lies the marshland of Gulstav Mose, which has very rich soil since reclamation was stopped in time, allowing the area to become marshland once more. It is of great importance as a breeding ground and resting place for many species of birds.

South Langeland is perhaps the country's largest autumn migration point for birds. All five areas around routes 82 and 83 are described in the book "Fyn on Foot - 36 Nature excursions in Fyn County". They have a great deal to offer, not least the open countryside of south Langeland.
