It is quite natural that an island with such a long coastline and so many outlying islands has a maritime tradition. This is reflected in the many tourist attractions on Fyn.

Denmark's Yachting Museum
- Tåsinge, Sydfyn Denmark's Yachting Museum is at Valdemar's Castle and displays the history of sailing through beautifully restored boats, dinghies and other items. The collection includes "Firefly", the boat with which the most famous Danish yachtsman, Paul Elvstrøm, won a gold medal at the 1948 Olympic games in England. Marstal Museum of Seafaring - Marstal, Ærø The museum comprises five buildings and more than 30 displays concerning seafaring. There are over 200 model ships, more than 130 ships in bottles, several hundred paintings of ships and much more besides. There is also a "native" collection including a "tour of the town", and extensive collections of costumes, faience, kitchen utensils and paintings. The Archipelago Sailing Smack Centre - Strynø, just off Langeland Tåsinge Captain's Home and Popular Collection - Tåsinge, Sydfyn The museum presents local popular culture in an old captain's home dating back to 1880. There is also a display about the tragic drama of the star-crossed lovers Elivra Madigan, a showgirl, and Dragoon Lieutenant Sixten Sparre. The museum also houses collections of music and costumes. The Willemoes memorial Rooms - Assens, Vestfyn A museum of cultural history displaying paintings by Vestfyn artists and memorial rooms to the Danish naval hero Peter Willemoes. The museum houses collections concerning seafaring, ship building and the history of the town. Ærø Museum - Ærøskøbing, Ærø The old bailiff's house, dating back to 1770, houses a collection of items of cultural and historical interest, from both the town and country, as well as seafaring, which dominated the life of the town in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In the summer, there are various special exhibitions. The Archipelago Sailing Smack Centre - Strynø, just off Langeland The Smakkecenter exhibition tells the natural and cultural history of the South Fyn Archipelago. The pivotal point of the exhibition is the sailing between the many islands in the area. Smack Dinghies, barges, ice boats, sleds and fishing boats which have all been used around the Archipelago throughout centuries, are exhibited here. |
