Central Fyn is home to Egeskov Castle – the most popular attraction on the island.
The castle stands in the centre of a lake, and legend has it that the foundations consist of oak trunks – so many, in fact, that “it took a whole oak forest” (Egeskov in Danish means “oak forest”).
The building, which appears so peaceful and idyllic to visitors today, was originally constructed for defence.
Egeskov Castle is privately owned, and a guided tour of the castle provides a fascinating voyage through the history of generations.
Delights for every gardening enthusiast.
The grounds are divided into different types of gardens: for example, there is a Renaissance Garden with a fountain, red gravel and box hedges; a Fuchsia Garden, which features the largest fuchsia collection in Europe, a Herb Garden, and an English Garden.
Last but not least, there is a centuries-old maze made up of neatly cut beech hedges. From time to time, these hedges have to be severely cut back for the maze to survive. The old maze can only be viewed from the outside, so to allow visitors to try the romance and excitement of a genuine maze, a full-size copy has been laid out in bamboo plants close to the playground. As far as we know, it is the largest in the world.
