H.C. Andersens HusHans Christian Andersen’s House – the house where our famous fairytale author was born – is probably the best-known museum in Denmark. The museum has recently been extended, and today houses a remarkable collection of rare and even unique publications of his works, private letters, paper cuttings, drawings and many of his personal possessions such as his pocket watch, clothes, the rope he always carried on his travels, and his suitcase.
The museum stands in the heart of the old part of the city, where the streets are narrow and cobbled, and where the hollyhocks bloom throughout the summer.

Claus Bergs altertavle i Odense DomkirkeAfter a guided tour of the museum, the walking tour “In the footsteps of Hans Christian Andersen” provides an excellent impression of the heart of the city.
The tour starts in the old part of Odense where Hans Christian Andersen’s House stands. It is also here that you can see Odense Concert Hall with the Carl Nielsen Museum.
The tour then passes Møntergården, Odense’s museum of town history, before heading down towards Påskestræde – the site of the charity school where Hans Christian Andersen was a pupil. From there, the route follows Odense Å river, passing one of the town washing places where women went to wash clothes in Hans Christian Andersen’s time.

Café FyrtøjetPast the Town Hall, the oldest parts of which date from 1881–83 (while the newer wing is from 1955), and on to the delightful St. Knud’s Church – one of the finest examples of elegant high Gothic architecture in Denmark.
One of the former kings of Denmark – Knud (Canute) the Holy – was murdered in this church in 1086, and the crypt now contains two reliquaries that hold the remains of Knud the Holy and, probably, his brother Benedict. However, the most impressive sight in the church is Claus Berg’s famous gilded altarpiece from around 1521. The design is a composition drawn from the passion of Christ.
After the visit to the church, the trip ends with a short walk along Munkemøllestræde, where Hans Christian Andersen’s Childhood Home stands.
Combination options:
Visit to Brandts Klædefabrik
Visit to the Odense Museum of Art
Sailing trips on Odense Å river (Odense Åfart ApS)
Visit to The Fyn Village Open-air Museum
