When the wind blows, the proud coast is at the mercy of the weather gods, and so you might prefer to retreat to your holiday home or campsite and savour the view of what we call the "north Fyn plain".

At the top end of Fyn you will also find the Enebærodde peninsula, and area of heath teeming with flora and fauna. It is of a size that means it can easily be explored on foot or by bike. It is certainly worth going there with a picnic. You can also picnic on the boat M/S Svanen, which tours Odense Fjord, while you breathe in the bracing fresh air.

The beaches around Otterup are very popular both for swimming and fishing. If you prefer an easier way to catch your supper, there is a Put & Take lake. The area also has a wealth of handicrafts, an open-air play at Nislevgård and a bustling town with a weekly market day, where there are lots of bargains to be had. What more could you want?

By the way, you should not miss the museum dedicated to Denmark's national food - the potato!

Otterup in the northern area of the green and fertile island Funen is surrounded by many clean beaches washed by the clear Kattegat as it flows into Odense fjord, the natural low level and flatness of the landscape keeping the waters shallow, warm and extremely safe for bathing with young children. Hiring cycles from one of the many well organised registered camping sites gives easy access to an idyllic rural lifestyle with roads leading to hidden villages and hamlets made up of colourful houses, many of which are thatched in wheat straw, the oldest traditional building craft. Stop for a drink or a meal at one of the old coaching houses (Kro). The whole family are welcome everywhere with absolutely no restrictions on children. Then perhaps take a relxing trip down the fjord on the pleasure boat M/S Svanen (The Swan) or visit one of the many small museums , handicraft workshops, nature reserves, or summer markets.
