Johannes Larsen Museet

A walking tour of Kerteminde takes you past the delightful old houses in the sections around Fiskergade and Præstegade before leading down past the harbour and the marina to Møllebakken.

This is where Johannes Larsen, the painter and mill owner, established his own little paradise at the start of the 1900s. The old mill is still standing, and the rare, beautiful trees in the gardens still burst into bloom every spring. The view over Kerteminde and the Great Belt is still as magnificent as it was back then, and it is all open to Møllebakken’s guests.

No matter whether you may be interested in mills, art, architecture, rare trees or art history, Møllebakken and the Johannes Larsen Museum are well worth a visit. The painter’s home still features its original furniture and other fittings. Take a walk through Johannes Larsen’s home and gardens. Breathe in the atmosphere from a period of Danish culture when the beauty of nature and everyday life took centre stage.

Nature had a very strong influence on the art of Johannes Larsen. He is particularly well-known for his pictures of birds and animals in the wonderful countryside of Fyn. The exhibition building next to the house contains a grand collection of Johannes Larsen’s own works, as well as paintings by more than 50 other artists – especially artists from Fyn.

The tour then continues with a coach trip that introduces visitors to the delightful countryside of the Hindsholm peninsula. The route passes Hverringe Gods (Manor), an impressive building that stands close to the road, before continuing through the distinctive villages of Måle and Viby – the latter being a protected village with an unusual church and a well-preserved windmill – and then heading back to Kerteminde.
