Øhavets Smakkecenter is the key to lots of unique scenic experiences on the water and on land – guaranteeing quality time for all the family, experiences for adults and children alike – and, importantly, safety on the water, whether in a sea kayak or a smack dinghy.
The people’s vehicle
Smakken, Øhavets FolkevognStrynø is a beautiful, vibrant little island offering lots of activities. Each year, it attracts lots of tourists, local people and school classes. Strynø has lots of things going on, you see! The little community has managed to keep things upbeat, and one of the reasons for this is the dynamo effect of Øhavets Smakkecenter… especially now that it has some lovely brand-new buildings as of summer 2007. A perfect maritime-inspired setting for things to see and do if you want to experience the archipelago close up – the scenery, the animals, the water or, for many people, simply enjoying a boating trip.
The smack dinghy used to be known as ‘the people’s vehicle’ of the archipelago – the rapid, easy method of transportation for animals or for fishing and travelling between islands. The dinghy is extremely easy to set up, and after just 1–2 hours of instruction, you’re ready to set sail.

Ideal for Island Hopping

In 2007, Anders Mørup took a summer sailing trip with his family – wife and two children, 5 and 7 – island-hopping around the South Fyn Archipelago. An experience he would thoroughly recommend to anyone looking for a holiday with a difference:
“We wanted to try something new, and it was a great experience to see the islands in the archipelago in a new light – you become more aware of the geography and the scenery, and you get a good sense of life as a ‘proper’ sailor… you get a bit of respect when you come sailing into a little harbour on a smack dinghy,” he says. “It’s a very authentic experience and we would definitely do it again, and maybe go to the islands we didn’t manage to see,” he says.
Inside the centre, there are lots of interesting things for children to see and do – e.g. a “build-your-own-boat” pool, films, a pool with little creatures you can reach out and touch, a historical exhibition of dinghies and all the facilities for the camp schools and school nature study classes that also use the centre. For example, you can borrow crab traps, fishing nets, underwater binoculars and microscopes and ‘immerse’ yourselves in all sorts of underwater creepy-crawlies…
The emphasis is on giving the adults a great experience – but it’s also important for children to feel excited about life in and on the water. The smack dinghy centre has managed to achieve this, because the material is presented in a way that’s suitable for children, with an element of both learning and play.
