My very own Fyn

The first time I went camping on Fyn was more than ten years ago, when a couple of cycling friends from America came to stay. Where were we to go? My husband and I wanted to show them something that would help them remember Denmark as a whole.

So we chose Fyn – Danes are particularly proud of showing off this island.

Our tactic was a success, and we enjoyed a fantastic tour of Fyn and the South Fyn Archipelago. We travel together every year, but our trip to Fyn still remains very special to us.

Out in the countryside

It can be difficult to define precisely what makes Fyn leave such a lasting impression. Once you have actually been there, however, it is not a problem. Everyone knows what you are talking about. The delights of the countryside are always important to us on our travels. They are always a safe bet.

On Fyn, the countryside is remarkably varied. The coasts with their beautiful beaches are really special. The woods and the undulating landscapes are something else, but woods and beaches are often to be found side by side.

The countryside is very accessible, and I am always impressed by the networks of cycling paths and rambling trails you will find almost everywhere. It is easy to find your way around, and that makes the countryside accessible to everybody. There are no high mountains or wide rivers, but the countryside is delightful and inviting.

Fyn cuisine

To travel is to live. That assertion was actually first voiced on Fyn – by Hans Christian Andersen. And how right he was.

But to travel and to live also involves eating, and in my opinion, eating and tasting local specialities is part and parcel of any holiday. You should always try to taste the local delicacies, no matter whether or not you find them immediately appealing.

On Fyn, this is a real pleasure. If you do not eat your fill while on holiday on Fyn, it is no-one’s fault but your own. However, this is not the best place in the world for dieting. Diets will have to wait until you return home. Fyn is very much the place to eat, drink and be merry.

Now with children, too

De sidste fem år har jeg igen og igen vendt tilbage til Fyn med mine børn. Der er noget fantastisk familievenligt over Fyn.

Over the past five years, I have returned to Fyn again and again with my children. There is such a delightful family ambience to Fyn. The campsites – both large and small – have been concentrating on children for many years. Not only as regards activities, but also in the context of the facilities at the sites. It is truly a pleasure to give your children a bath in the evening when they have been out playing all day. Most campsites on Fyn and the Islands are located close to the sea, and our family finds this irresistibly attractive – not simply on account of the opportunities to go sunbathing, but just as much for the chance to collect stones and sea shells. This is a great way to spend a couple of hours.

One of my most recent trips to Fyn was with my son, who was four years old at the time. We cycled from the island of Ærø to the island of Thurø via Langeland and Tåsinge – a fantastic trip, and ideal for families with children. The route takes you along safe, minor roads through the delightful countryside, and there are all kinds of places to take breaks. Simply wonderful.

Always to Fyn

I was born and raised in West Jutland, and have lived my entire adult life in Copenhagen and on West Zealand.

As a travel journalist, I have travelled in 20 American states and 60 different countries on six continents. Having visited all these destinations, and being blessed with untameable curiosity to see the world, I can nevertheless say that I still have to spend a holiday on Fyn at least once a year.

In addition, I regularly return to the island to visit friends and family who have had the good sense to settle there. Just think how lucky I am. I have an excuse to visit Fyn during my holidays, on public holidays and at weekends. Fortunately, there is always a good reason to drive to Fyn.

There is also something quite charming about the Fyn dialect, which makes the people of Fyn sound as delightful as the island on which they live. You feel the smile break out on your lips and your mood automatically lightens. That is just how it is with the people on Fyn.
