History of Fyn
The Ladby Burial Ship - Grave and Ship
The only extant Viking burial ship in Denmark is at Ladby. Around the year 925, a chieftain was buried in his ship with valuable grave goods: a silver buckle, exclusive clothes, a silver plate, a harness for dog leashes and at least 4 dogs, 11 horses and much more. Over 600 objects and fragments were found. The grave was plundered soon after the burial, possibly because a rival noble family wished to show their power.
The ship was 22 m long, 3 m wide and 1 m from the keel to the side rail. There was room for 32 oarsmen, and originally about 60 m2 of sail. There was a dragon's head on the bows and a tail at the stern. Today the imprint of the ship can be seen, as well as more than 2000 rivets and the original anchor with chain.
The Ladby Viking Museum
In 2007, a new exhibition building will be opened to present the Viking history of the whole region. It will be possible to see original finds from the excavation of the Ladby Ship Burial site. A magnificent 1:10 scale model of the ship shows how it would originally have looked, and a reconstruction of the entire burial process will be presented as a working exhibition.
