Worldbuilding - an outdoor exhibition by Jens Settergren

Ten cosmic mosaic portals have landed in front of the Brandts Art Museum

About the exhibition
Jens Settergren's ten mosaic portals give us access to different times and cultures' ideas about the universe. Join the journey and rediscover the cosmos.

The mosaics combine modern computer logic with ancient craftsmanship. The mosaic tradition can be traced back to the first civilizations of Mesopotamia, where temples were adorned with stones, seashells and ivory. As in today's pixel-based images, the complex motifs of the mosaics are formed by small building blocks.

Worldbuilding is a concept known from gaming and literature, especially from fantasy and science fiction. Entire universes are constructed here, such as in Star Wars and The Legend of Zelda. In the exhibition, the titles of the mosaics point to a contemporary computer universe and appear as actors in a worldbuilding process that you can participate in. The mosaics are based on Settergren's interpretations of historical motifs and modern visualizations of the cosmos and send us on inner and outer journeys.

In the summer of 2021, the mosaics will become part of the Galaxy Trail in Vollsmose; a permanent work of art.
