Status of Denmark’s Cycling Node Network in Funen and the Islands
Work on Denmark’s Cycling Node Network in Funen and the surrounding islands continues according to plan, and several important milestones have been reached during the year. Most recently, Geopark Funen has been fully signposted with the new cycling signs, and around half of the approximately 7,500 signs across Funen and the islands have now been installed.
The new signs are a key part of establishing Denmark’s first cohesive recreational cycling network. Once completed, around 3,400 kilometres of cycle-friendly roads and paths will be connected in one integrated network spanning all ten municipalities in Funen.
Although the work is not yet finished, cyclists can already experience the new signposting system at several locations across Funen and the islands. Installation will continue throughout the autumn and winter and, weather permitting, the final signs are expected to be in place by June 2027.
Alongside the signposting work, efforts are also underway to develop information boards, cycling maps, digital mapping solutions and a route planner, making it even easier to explore Funen and the islands by bike.
When the Cycling Node Network is completed, Funen and the islands will become the first region in Denmark with a fully developed recreational cycling network based on the model known from countries such as Belgium and the Netherlands.
The Cycling Node Network across Funen and the Islands stretches for an impressive 3,400 km, guiding you along some of the most scenic and cycle-friendly roads and paths in the region. Langeland and Ærø are the first islands to be signposted, with the rest of Funen set to follow soon.
