Æbelø - Havørred Hotspot nr. 116
There are good fishing spots around the island of Æbelø. You must wear waders and be able to cope with the hike through the water, and then you can catch many fish, especially between April-July and September-November.
Æbelø offers some of Denmark’s most beautiful sea trout coastline with fishing year-round and in all wind directions.
The Æbelø adventure begins with a four-kilometer walk in waders – only the first third is knee- to thigh-deep water.
Park at Jersore and follow the poles marking the wading route. You can always reach and return from the island regardless of high or low tide. However, be aware that strong northwesterly winds can cause unusually high water. There are deep channels along the wading route, so never attempt the crossing in fog, and start your return in good time before dark. In darkness and sea mist, there is a real risk of losing orientation.
Important safety tips before your trip to Æbelø:
Sadly, over the years, there have been a few tragic accidents where anglers lost their lives on the way to or from Æbelø. By following a few simple precautions, you’ll stay safe:
- Always check the weather forecast before you go.
- Stay home if fog or strong northwesterly winds are forecast – or choose one of Funen’s many other exciting coastal spots instead.
- Leave Æbelø in good time to ensure your return is in daylight.
- And finally: Always bring a flashlight, a compass, and a waterproof-packed mobile phone.
The trip is about 4 km long, 1½ km being in water. A trip around the island will be about 7 km in all. Beware of the tide and the direction of the wind – get a tide table and a leaflet at the tourist office or check it out online by clicking here.
