Approx. 5.5 km north of Kerteminde you will find the two small villages, Viby and Salby.
Place name researchers know that towns ending in -by got their names in the Viking Age, and the name Viby could mean the village with viet – as we were a holy place – while Salby means the village with the hall, so here was in all probability a particularly large house.
Detectorists have made many fine metal finds of both bronze and gilded silver from the fields around the current villages, e.g. pieces from a rare withers chair that is part of equipment for horses. It confirms that people have lived here continuously for at least 1,000 years.
