The Oak Processionary Caterpillar on Funen

The oak processionary caterpillar is found only at specific locations and on certain oak trees – not across the whole of Funen. Most attractions, beaches, towns and experiences are unaffected, so you can continue to enjoy your holiday in Odense and throughout Funen with confidence.

There has been considerable attention on the oak processionary caterpillar on Funen, but visitors can still safely enjoy both Odense and the rest of Funen.

The oak processionary caterpillar is the larval stage of a moth that lives on oak trees. The caterpillars' tiny hairs can cause itching, skin irritation, or discomfort if people come into close contact with them or their nests. The caterpillars are found only at specific locations and are associated with particular oak trees – not entire towns or larger areas.

The vast majority of attractions, urban areas, beaches, restaurants, accommodation providers, and visitor experiences across Funen are unaffected. Visitors can therefore continue to enjoy their holiday as normal.

The caterpillar stage is temporary, and the caterpillars are therefore only present for a short period of the year, typically during parts of June and July.
