Around Tranekær Castle (21 km)
Explore Langeland’s rolling hat‑shaped hills on a cycling tour through forests, open fields and historic villages – with Tranekær Castle as the highlight and beautiful views of the sea on both sides of the island.
Tranekær and the hat‑shaped hills
This cycling tour takes you through the hilly landscape around Tranekær, shaped during the last Ice Age more than 10,000 years ago. Here, you encounter Langeland’s characteristic hat‑shaped hills, which lie in two parallel rows and create a soft, rolling terrain ideal for small winding cycle paths with very little traffic.
Along the way, you cycle through a vibrant cultural landscape influenced by the history of Tranekær Manor – with fields framed by living hedgerows, forests of ancient oak trees and traces of historic farming. Several times, you pass burial mounds from the Neolithic period, and at intervals the landscape opens with views of the sea on both sides of the island.
Tranekær Castle and castle park
In Tranekær, you encounter the striking red castle, perched high on a hat‑shaped hill. The castle park, inspired by English garden landscapes from the mid‑1800s, is home to TICKON (Tranekær International Center for Art and Nature), where art and nature interact closely. Opposite the park lie the Medicinal Gardens with themed sections featuring plants related to breathing, metabolism and circulation.
The castle village of Tranekær, built in the German style, features many protected houses, small attractions and local highlights such as the Souvenariet and the Bee Farm, where you can experience the fascinating world of bees.
Forest, wetlands and history
Further east, you reach Botofte Skovmose, a restored wetland rich in birdlife. The route also passes a historic tobacco drying barn, a reminder of Langeland’s tobacco production during World War II. Near Stengade Forest, you can make a short detour to Oehlenschläger’s Beech, which offers beautiful views over the Langeland Belt – the place where poet Adam Oehlenschläger is believed to have found inspiration for the Danish national anthem in 1819.
In Tullebølle Leisure Park, you will find toilets, a playground, shelters and a picnic shelter before the route leads you back to Tranekær.
The cycle tour can be ridden in both directions, and you choose your own starting point.
