Kasmose Forest

The forest sliding towards the sea

You walk narrow forest paths where the ground beneath you has shifted over the years. Kasmose Forest lies on the north coast of the Røjle Peninsula, north of Middelfart, with views down over the Little Belt. The slopes consist of plastic clay, and when large amounts of rain gather in the soil, sections of the forest slide down towards the beach. Fallen trees, exposed roots and leaning trunks bear witness to the movement still shaping the landscape.

The forest was purchased by the state in 1978, has been left untouched since 1981, and was formally protected as untouched forest in 1993. Nothing is felled or planted here, and nature is left to find its own way. This has given rise to an unusual variety of animals and plants, and in several spots you’ll find protected orchids and other rare species thriving in the heavy, nutrient-rich clay soil.

Marked trails lead you through leafy forest, past the car park and on into the forest’s interior. There are two areas with facilities, while the rest of the forest is a quiet zone – giving peace to the birds, the animals and yourself, with no large organised events held on the site.

Kasmose Forest suits you if you want to hike in hilly and at times demanding terrain, where the path winds between roots, fallen trunks and low slopes. There are shelters in the forest if you want to spend the night close to the Little Belt coast, and a toilet by the car park. The walk can be limited to Kasmose Forest, or you can continue along the coast towards Røjle Klint.
