KulturØen gathers Middelfart’s cultural life in a single building on an artificial island by the harbour, where tourist information, a library, a cinema and a café sit side by side. Read a good book, catch a film, or enjoy a cup of coffee.
Architecture that mirrors the Little Belt
The boats in NyHavn rock along the quay as you walk out onto the tip of KulturØen. The building sits on an artificial island on Middelfart’s waterfront, surrounded by the two private marinas NyHavn 1 and NyHavn 2, with views of both Little Belt bridges.
KulturØen was designed by the architecture firm Schmidt Hammer Lassen and opened in August 2005. Its shape is sculpted to echo the lines of the sea and the arches of the bridges, and the pre-weathered zinc cladding gives the building a raw, maritime look.
Under one roof you’ll find the town’s tourist information, Middelfart Library, Panorama cinema, Oscars Kaffebar and the panoramic restaurant Mast. In 2016 the ground floor was redesigned by Rosan Bosch Studio, opening up the library and giving it more light and transparency towards the rest of the building.
KulturØen serves as Middelfart’s culture house and a natural gathering point, whether you want to watch a film, borrow a book, hold a meeting, or simply walk along the water and watch the boats. The place suits anyone who wants to combine culture with harbour life in the middle of town.
