Bike Tour: Christiansminde and Around Thurø - 24 km

The bike tour starts at Svendborg Havn and follows Christiansmindesti (path) along the coastline before crossing the causeway to Thurø. The island offers a varied route through coastal landscapes, woodland and open countryside, with changing views throughout the journey.

Along the way, cyclists pass several of Thurø’s distinctive natural areas, including Smørmosen and Thurø Rev. The narrow peninsula of Thurø Rev extends into the water and forms one of the characteristic landscapes of The South Fyn Archipelago. Views of islands, bays and the busy waters of Svendborgsund accompany much of the route.

The tour also highlights the maritime heritage of the area. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Svendborgsund was an important centre for shipbuilding and seafaring, with shipyards located in Svendborg, Tåsinge and Thurø. Generations of shipbuilders, sailors and craftsmen helped shape the local communities and economy.

At Gambøt Havn, traces of this maritime history are still visible. The harbour has long been a gathering place for seafarers and shipyard workers, and the area includes old fishermen’s cottages as well as active maritime businesses. Nearby, Walsteds Baadeværft A/S continues the local tradition of boatbuilding.

The route also passes Grasten, a former loading place that once played an important role in transport and trade across the sound. Today, the historic pier is still used by the ferry M/S Helge, which was built in 1924 at J. Ring-Andersens Skibsværft in Svendborg, one of Denmark’s oldest operating wooden shipyards.

After completing the circuit around Thurø, the route returns across the causeway and through Christiansminde before ending at Svendborg Havn. The 24 km ride combines coastal scenery, nature experiences and stories from the maritime history that has shaped the area around Svendborgsund.
