A sculpture in a historic setting

Surrounded by lawns, mature trees and historic buildings, Danaë is a natural feature of King’s Garden. The sculpture forms part of the park’s collection of monuments and public artworks, offering visitors a chance to experience art in a peaceful setting in the heart of Odense. Its central location also makes it an easy stop while exploring the city centre on foot.

The story behind Danaë

The sculpture takes its inspiration from Greek mythology. Danaë was the daughter of King Acrisius, who tried to prevent a prophecy from coming true by keeping her isolated from the outside world. Despite his efforts, the god Zeus visited her in the form of a shower of gold. Their encounter later became a popular subject in European art.

In Gerhard Henning’s interpretation, however, the myth itself takes a secondary role. Instead, the artist focuses on the figure’s posture and expression, giving the sculpture a sense of movement, emotion and vitality.

A long history in Odense

Danaë has been part of Odense’s public spaces since 1928, when the Ny Carlsberg Foundation donated a cast of the sculpture to the city. It was first installed in Munke Mose before being moved to Eventyrhaven. After many years outdoors, the original version suffered extensive weather damage and was eventually transferred to a museum.

In 1965, a new bronze cast replaced the earlier sculpture. It remained in Eventyrhaven until 1984, when it was moved to King’s Garden, where it stands today. As a result, Danaë is not only a work of art but also part of the story of how Odense’s parks and public spaces have changed over time.

About the artist Gerhard Henning

Gerhard Henning (1880-1967) was a Swedish-born artist who spent most of his career in Denmark. After starting out as a painter and graphic artist, he became known primarily for his sculptures. Female figures were a recurring theme throughout his work, and Danaë reflects his continued interest in classical subjects and the human form.
