Holckenhavn carries the story of courage, unity, and one of the most dramatic moments in Langeland’s history. During the Swedish attack on 7 February 1659, the area around the manor became the centre of intense fighting, where local farmers and members of the nobility stood together to defend the island.

In the darkness of night, Swedish warships closed in on the eastern coast. But Langeland was prepared, and the warning quickly reached both the farmers and the estate owner at Holckenhavn. Leading the defence was 66‑year‑old nobleman Vincents Steensen, driven by duty and determination.

The decisive clash took place at Andemose Knøs, where the Swedes landed and close‑quarters combat broke out. Steensen was fatally wounded and died later that night. His final words – urging unity and perseverance – were later commemorated in 1909 on a memorial stone near the coast.

Today, the story of Holckenhavn stands as a powerful reminder of a time when ordinary people and nobles fought side by side for their homeland.
