Interrail to the Danish islands

Ærø, Samsø, Langeland and Læsø are obvious stops on a journey through Denmark. Here you’ll find open countryside, beaches, harbour towns, cycle routes and local experiences – and the journey there is part of the adventure.

Interrail to Ærø

It’s easy to get to Ærø by train, bus and ferry. From Odense, you can take the train to Svendborg and then take the ferry on to Ærøskøbing. You can also travel by train to Sønderborg and then by bus to Fynshav, where the ferry departs for Søby. From the South Funen area, there are bus services to the ferries in Faaborg and Rudkøbing, with departures to Søby and Marstal respectively.

What awaits you on Ærø?

On Ærø in the South Funen Archipelago, you’ll find open landscapes, restaurants specialising in local produce and historical attractions, such as the iconic bathing huts, the maritime museum, the market town of Ærøskøbing and the island’s old lighthouse, which you can still climb to the top of. Interrail to Samsø

Samsø is situated right in the middle of Denmark and is easy to reach by train, bus and ferry from both Jutland and Zealand. From Copenhagen, you can take the train to Kalundborg and then take the ferry on to Ballen. You can also travel by train to Aarhus and take the pedestrian and cycle ferry directly to Sælvig, or you can take the light rail to Odder and from there a bus to Hou, from where the ferry sails to Sælvig.

Samsø is a miniature version of Denmark: beautiful coastlines, rolling countryside, white sandy beaches, fertile farmland, a fjord with islands and islets, and no fewer than 22 charming villages! Interrail to Langeland

Take the train to Svendborg or Nakskov, then continue by bus, bike or ferry – and discover a Danish island with 152 km of coastline, nature, festivals, dark starry skies and plenty of space to explore at your own pace. Here, the pace is slower, the distances are manageable, and nature is close at hand – whether you’re travelling alone, with friends or as part of a longer trip through Europe.

What awaits you on Langeland?

On Langeland in the South Funen Archipelago, you’ll find long stretches of coastline, hathills, wild horses, charming harbour towns and the market town of Rudkøbing. Go for a cycle ride through the countryside, explore Dovns Klint, the Medicinal Gardens, Langeland Fort and the island’s many beaches – or use Langeland as a stopover on your journey between Funen, Lolland-Falster and the South Funen Archipelago. Interrail to Læsø

Læsø is the largest island in the Kattegat, boasting 100 km of coastline, unique natural scenery, the famous seaweed roofs, Læsø salt, spiny lobsters, plus wonderful walks, plenty of cultural activities, a stunning starry sky and loads of space to explore at your own pace. Take the train to Frederikshavn, then walk the five-minute journey to the Læsø ferry terminal at Ø-Pladsen 2 in Frederikshavn. You can also take the bus to Frederikshavn from Aalborg. After a pleasant 90-minute ferry crossing, you’ll arrive on Læsø.

What awaits you on Læsø?

Travel around the island on the free shuttle bus, hire a bike, go for a walk along the coast, sleep under the stars or find another cosy place to stay locally. On Læsø, your pulse quickly slows down; everything is close by, and nature begins just a few metres from where the ferry docks – whether you’re travelling alone, with friends or as part of a longer trip through Europe.
