Oluf Bager's Gaard

Behind the striking façade on Nørregade lies one of Odense’s most important historic townhouses. Built in 1586 by the wealthy merchant Oluf Bager, Oluf Bager’s Mødrene Gård is today one of the best-preserved examples of Renaissance architecture in the city. More than 400 years of history come together with modern-day use in a building that remains a living part of Odense.

Renaissance architecture in the heart of Odense

Oluf Bager’s Mødrene Gård is among Odense’s oldest secular buildings and a rare example of an elegant Renaissance townhouse. Merchant Oluf Bager commissioned the property in 1586 on land that had previously belonged to his mother’s family. This is the origin of the name Mødrene Gård, meaning “the maternal family’s estate”.

Facing Nørregade is the solid brick-built front house with its distinctive Renaissance gables, while the richly decorated half-timbered building overlooks the courtyard. Together, the buildings reflect a period when affluent merchants shaped the growth of Odense and erected some of the city’s most impressive architecture.

Oluf Bager and Renaissance trade in Odense

Oluf Bager was one of the most successful merchants of the 16th century and among the wealthiest citizens in Denmark. Through trade with markets abroad, he built a substantial fortune and even lent money to the king on several occasions. The estate reflects the prosperity and international trade that characterised Odense during the Renaissance.

Over the centuries, the estate has served many purposes, including as a merchant’s residence, trading house and administrative building. In the cellar, traces of an even older property can still be seen, and in 1772 the first edition of the newspaper Fyens Stiftstidende was printed here.

Heritage restored for modern use

In 2003, Realdania By & Byg acquired the property and carried out an extensive restoration project, completed in 2005. The restoration focused on preserving the building’s historic layers and architectural qualities while ensuring it could remain an active part of contemporary city life.

Today, parts of the estate serve as offices for Realdania By & Byg, while other sections are leased to businesses. In the former stable building, visitors will find Restaurant Oluf Bagers Gård, where they can experience the historic surroundings first-hand.

For visitors to Odense, Oluf Bager’s Mødrene Gård is a worthwhile stop while exploring the historic city centre. The well-preserved merchant’s estate tells the story of Renaissance trade, the development of Odense and the careful preservation of the city’s cultural heritage.
