When pop and rock became short films

When the music video became a fully-fledged part of the music industry, artists and directors gained new opportunities to stage a song visually. Some videos placed the musicians centre stage as actors, whilst others created short narratives that only loosely – or not at all – followed the song’s lyrics. The result was a wealth of different images, narratives and visual experiments, which today also serve as a window into the music, style and popular culture of bygone eras.
