A tale of hopes and ambitions

The sculpture is based on Hans Christian Andersen's story of a woman on her way to market with a basket of eggs. As she walks, she starts imagining everything she will buy with the money she expects to earn. One hen will become several hens, which will grow into a thriving poultry farm, and before long her plans become more ambitious than ever.

Lost in her daydreams, she straightens her back and lifts her head a little too high. The eggs slip from the basket, smashing on the ground and taking all her dreams with them. It is a timeless story about striving for a better life, but also a reminder not to count your chickens before they hatch. Varming's sculpture captures the exact moment when dreams begin to outpace reality.

Hanne Varming and everyday life

The sculpture was created by Hanne Varming (1939-2022), one of Denmark's most respected figurative sculptors. She is known for designing the portrait of Queen Margrethe featured on Danish 10 and 20 kroner coins, but much of her work focused on portraying ordinary people and everyday life.

"The Woman with the Eggs" reflects that approach perfectly. Although inspired by a fairy tale, the figure feels familiar and relatable. The sculpture is also part of Odense's collection of fairy tale sculptures in Odense, where artists have interpreted Hans Christian Andersen's stories in bronze, stone and other materials throughout the city. Unveiled in 1997, it has become a familiar sight at the corner of Kongensgade and Slotsgade.
