Valdemars Slot – museum of art in historical settings
Explore Valdemars Slot, where historic interiors frame a vibrant art destination. Cultural heritage and contemporary art meet in scenic surroundings.

A historic castle in scenic surroundings
Valdemars Slot on Tåsinge has reopened as a public art destination where historic masterpieces meet international contemporary art. Built under Christian IV and later home to naval hero Niels Juel, it is today Denmark’s largest private home and the only former royal castle in private ownership. Surrounded by forest and coastline, the landscape forms part of the experience, with public paths leading to the castle.
A meeting point for art and history
The castle’s own collection forms the basis of the exhibitions. Portraits by Carl Gustaf Pilo and Jens Juel are shown alongside contemporary works, creating new perspectives. The historic interiors are an integral part of the interpretation.
Contemporary art in the castle
Exhibitions unfold across halls, chapel and side buildings. Works by international and Danish artists are presented site-specifically. Jiří Georg Dokoupil’s works, installations by Pernille With Madsen, sound pieces by Hanne Lippard and sculptures by Rong Bao contribute to a diverse programme, alongside artists such as Anna Munk.
Exhibitions and collaborations
An active programme of exhibitions, residencies and international collaborations shapes the development of the site. Projects with artists including William Kentridge and Bronwyn Lace connect local context with global perspectives.
Experiences throughout summer
From May to September, a multidisciplinary programme of exhibitions, performances and events activates both interiors and outdoor spaces. Art, history and nature come together in a layered experience.
