
How to get around Fyn and the Islands
Whether you prefer to explore by train, bus, light rail, car, bicycle, or ferry, getting around Fyn is easy. Here you’ll find practical information on connections, tickets, and digital planning tools to help you navigate around smoothly.
When you visit Fyn and the islands, you’ll probably want to experience as much as possible and luckily, that’s easy here. With many flexible transport options, you can mix and match car, train, bus, bicycle, ferry, and walking or hiking, as you explore.
Travelling by car on Fyn and the islands
Fyn has a well-developed road network, and you can cross the island from coast to coast in less than an hour. There are no toll roads on Fyn besides the Great Belt Bridge between Fyn and Zealand. You can find prices and ticket information on the Great Belt Bridge's website.
Parking is generally easy in most towns, and local signage clearly shows where parking is allowed.
Fyn is also equipped with an extensive network of charging stations for electric cars, making it easy to travel sustainably. You can find charging points on Chargemap, or EasyCharging.app.
Many hotels also offer charging facilities for guests.
Car rental on Fyn
If you'd like the freedom to explore Fyn at your own pace, renting a car is a convenient option. In Odense, you’ll find several rental companies at or near Odense Central Station, including Europcar, Hertz, Avis, and Enterprise.
Rental stations are also available in towns such as Svendborg, Middelfart, and other larger centres. Many providers allow one-way rentals, which can be practical if you plan to continue your trip in Jutland or on Zealand.

Travelling by train on Fyn
Fyn has a reliable rail network running from east to west and southwards to Svendborg. Services are operated by Danish Railway Services and Arriva, and you can check timetables and buy tickets on Journeyplanner or Danish Railway Services' (DSB) website.
The main line runs from Nyborg in the east to Middelfart in the west, with stops in Odense, Langeskov, Aarup, Tommerup, and other towns.
IntercityLyn (ICL) trains stop only in Odense, while Intercity (IC) trains stop at several stations across Fyn. From Odense, the Svendborg Line runs several times per hour to Svendborg, one of the gateways to the South Funen Archipelago.
Bicycles are allowed on most trains for a small fee.
Ferries between Fyn and the Islands
The South Funen Archipelago consists of around 100 islands and islets, many of which are easily reached by ferry.
Daily ferry services connect Fyn with the surrounding islands:
- From Svendborg: Ærø (Ærøskøbing), Skarø, Drejø, Strynø
- From Faaborg: Lyø, Avernakø, Bjørnø, Ærø (Søby)
- From Assens: Bågø
- From Rudkøbing: Strynø, Ærø (Marstal)
- From Kerteminde: Romsø
- From Odense (Klintebjerg): Vigelsø in the Odense Fjord
- From Ærø: Birkholm (car-free)
Many ferries carry both bicycles and cars, making it easy to combine different ways of travelling.

Getting around by bus on Fyn and the Islands
FynBus connects Odense with nearly all major towns on Fyn, including Svendborg, Nyborg, Bogense, Otterup, Kerteminde, Assens, and Faaborg. From Svendborg, buses also run to Rudkøbing on Langeland, and between Faaborg, Svendborg, and Nyborg.
On Ærø, buses run several times a day across the island from Søby to Ærøskøbing and Marstal. Best of all: the service is free of charge. Standard bicycles can be brought along from the end stations, just simply ask the driver.

Tickets can be bought from the driver or digitally through the Rejsebillet app. If you'd rather pay by cash on board, it’s best to bring exact change.
If you expect to travel frequently in one day, the FynBus Tourist Ticket offers unlimited travel on Fyn and Langeland. The ticket is available in the app or at selected sales points. More information, such as bicycle rules and additional offers, can be found on the FynBus website.
City buses and light rail in Odense
In Odense, it’s easy to get around by city bus or the Odense Letbane (light rail), which together cover almost the entire city.
The light rail connects Odense Central Station, the city centre, the ODEON conference centre, and the university, quick, quiet, and climate-friendly. It’s a convenient way to travel between your hotel, the train station, and main attractions.
The same ticket can be used for the light rail and the city buses. Tickets are available in the Rejsebillet app.
In the city centre, free city buses run every 10–15 minutes. They stop at central locations such as Banegårdspladsen, Kongensgade, Brandts, and Munke Mose: ideal if you want to explore the city on foot and move easily between shops, cafés, and sights.

Cycling on Fyn and the Islands
Fyn is a cycling-friendly island with short distances, quiet roads, and more than 1,200 km of signposted cycling routes. Cycling is a simple and flexible way to get around both in towns and between the smaller island communities.
Many ferries allow bicycles for free, and on most trains you can bring your bike for a small extra fee, making it easy to combine different modes of transport.
