About the national route

The Baltic Sea Cycle Route (National Route 8) is Denmark’s longest national cycle route, stretching over 820 km. Along the way, you’ll discover some of Southern Denmark’s most scenic landscapes, cosy coastal towns, and unique experiences all year round.

Even outside the peak season, the route has a special charm. Here, you can get close to local life and enjoy the peace and beauty of nature in spring, autumn, and winter.

Experiences on the route

The Three Market Towns

The market towns of Svendborg, Faaborg and Assens each have their own unique character – it’s up to you to pick a favourite. Between them lie charming villages where life unfolds at a slower pace, with room for both outdoor living and togetherness.

The route between Svendborg and Assens follows the coastline for much of the way, so you’re never far from a refreshing swim or a relaxing break by the water. The first change from the coastal landscape comes in Svanninge Bakker – the “Funen Alps” – with rolling terrain and sweeping views.

Along the way, you can detour to Egeskov Castle or explore the scenic peninsulas of Helnæs and Thorø Huse. From Faaborg, you also have the option of island hopping to the small islands of the South Funen Archipelago.

Faaborg

Faaborg is one of Funen’s most beautiful market towns, with the South Funen Archipelago right on its doorstep and the green hills of Svanninge Bakker in the background. If you’re looking for classic South Funen charm, you’ve come to the right place.

Colourful half-timbered houses, cobbled streets and cosy lanes give the town its special atmosphere, and it’s easy to spend hours exploring one of Denmark’s oldest market towns. Faaborg is also a popular sailing destination, with ferries from the harbour taking you to the islands of the archipelago.

The Helnæs Peninsula

Helnæs is a small peninsula with striking nature, a vibrant local community and a fascinating history. Its name means “holy headland”, and it may once have been the site of pagan rituals honouring the gods.

Even the journey across the causeway to Helnæs is an experience. With sea on both sides and views of fishermen, kitesurfers and windsurfers, you’ll feel surrounded by water. On Helnæs, you can enjoy nature both on land and at sea. Lace up your hiking boots for a walk through the Bobakker hills, then relax with a well-deserved break at Helnæs Kro.
