The story of Middelfart

You step through the door at Algade 8 and meet the town’s history, told through changing special exhibitions that put a new theme from Middelfart’s local history in focus every year from May to October. Middelfart Museum runs several exhibition sites in and around town, including Henner Friisers Hus, with an exhibition on porpoise hunting, and an exhibition on the Old Little Belt Bridge at Bridgewalking’s welcome centre. The museum also arranges seasonal activities and guided cultural-history tours.

The museum is also behind MIND in Teglgårdsparken, which, with Denmark’s largest collection of psychiatric history, tells the story of treatment, patients and an institution that shaped the town for more than a hundred years.

Back on Algade, once you’re done exploring, you can sit down at Café Inga. The café is named after Inga Jørgensen, who for many years ran the now-closed Grimmerhus guesthouse, and is furnished with period furniture and Royal Copenhagen Blue Fluted porcelain from there. In the museum shop, you can browse books, posters, maps, postcards and various gift items.

From late November to mid-December, you can experience Peberkagebyen (the Gingerbread Town), while the museum also shows a small Christmas exhibition.

Middelfart Museum suits you if you want to combine local history with an afternoon of exhibitions, cake and shopping, all in one place in the middle of Middelfart.
