An active park in the heart of Odense

Munke Mose is an ideal place to take a break from the city or get your heart rate up in green surroundings. The wide paths along the Odense River are popular with runners, walkers and cyclists alike, while the large lawns provide space for everything from picnics and relaxation to ball games and other outdoor activities. You will also find outdoor fitness equipment, and many locals use the area for their daily exercise or as a starting point for longer walks along the river.

Munke Mose offers experiences for both children and adults. The playground is one of the most popular in Odense and is inspired by elements from nature, with giant butterflies, fish and water lily leaves inviting children to play and explore.

From Munke Mose, you can also get out on the water with Odense Aafart, which offers boat trips on the you would like to explore the river at your own pace. Along the paths, you will come across several fairy tale-inspired sculptures, including The Little Mermaid, The Seahorse

The area also hosts a number of recurring traditions and events throughout the year and is one of the places where city life and nature come together in a unique way.

A park with more than 100 years of history

Munke Mose has not always looked the way it does today. Originally, the area was a low-lying marsh and meadow that was frequently flooded by the Odense River. In 1881, the Municipality of Odense purchased the land to ensure it would remain a green area free from development. In the early 20th century, the transformation of the area gained momentum when local seed merchant Christian Dæhnfeldt financed most of the construction of the park that still forms the setting for life in Munke Mose today.

The name Munke Mose originates from Munke Mølle, a mill connected to St. Canute’s Monastery that stood by the river during the Middle Ages. Traces of this history can still be seen in the landscape, where the lake in the park is a remnant of the old mill pond.
