The StrynØ Symposium on Strynø – art, nature and new perspectives

The StrynØ Symposium on Strynø brings together art, knowledge and dialogue at the Øhavets Smakke- og Naturcenter. The symposium serves as the starting point for an annual artistic production, which is subsequently exhibited or presented at the centre and ties in with the site’s role as an educational hub within the UNESCO Global Geopark ‘The South Funen Archipelago’. The theme is ‘The Mobile Human’ and centres on the relationship between humans and nature. How do humans coexist with all living things around us – and how do we seize the opportunities to continue exploring and moving through the world?

Lectures on landscape, climate and humanity with

Rane Willerslev, Anders Skriver Hansen and Elise Sydendal.

Three speakers will offer different perspectives on the symposium’s theme. Senior researcher Anders Skriver Hansen works on topics including tourism, the green transition, recreational landscapes and the relationship between humans and nature. Elise Sydendal focuses on climate, rural areas and local communities, whilst anthropologist and museum director Rane Willerslev brings his experience from anthropology, research and public engagement to the discussion. The programme includes presentations, group discussions and a panel debate, providing opportunities to listen, ask questions and bring different viewpoints together.

Strynø and Strynø Kalv form part of the UNESCO Global Geopark: The South Funen Archipelago. The landscape tells the story of an area shaped by ice, rising sea levels and people’s lives close to the sea. This makes Strynø a natural setting for a symposium exploring the relationship between people, the landscape and the living world around us.

At the South Funen Archipelago Taste and Nature Centre, you can learn about the importance of the ‘smakkejoller’ (traditional fishing boats) to life in the South Funen Archipelago and about the island’s natural environment. You can also visit Strynø Mill, take a stroll around Strynø Harbour or simply slow down and soak up the unique island atmosphere between the fields and the sea.

Practical information

The StrynØ Symposium takes place at the Archipelago’s Taste and Nature Centre on Strynø. Strynø can be reached by ferry from Rudkøbing, and from there the journey continues across the island.
