Valdemars Castle
Step into Valdemars Slot, where historic interiors frame a vibrant art destination. Past and present meet through artistic expression.

Art destination in a historic setting
Valdemars Slot on Tåsinge has reopened as a public art destination, where the castle’s historic collection is presented in dialogue with international contemporary art. As Denmark’s largest private home and a former royal castle in private ownership, it combines cultural heritage with an active exhibition programme and museum interpretation. The historic interiors provide a distinctive setting for the artworks.
Collection and artistic dialogue
The castle’s collection forms the foundation of the experience. Portraits by Carl Gustaf Pilo and Jens Juel are recontextualised and invite reflection on representation and power. Monumental royal portraits remain in the grand hall, while contemporary works introduce new perspectives.
Historical context
The history of the castle is an integral part of the visit. Built under Christian IV and later home to naval hero Niels Juel, it reflects changing periods and social structures. This context adds depth to both historical and contemporary works.
Museum in nature
Surrounded by forest and coastline, the natural setting becomes part of the experience. Public paths lead through the landscape to the castle, connecting nature and culture.
Exhibitions and activities
During summer, exhibitions, performances and events activate both interiors and historic side buildings. Artistic projects engage with the site, its history and surroundings.
