Experiences on the route

A journey through the gems of East Funen

The charming market town of Nyborg offers both historical experiences, cosy city life, and several family-friendly beaches. Make sure to visit Nyborg Marina, or stop just south of the town to admire the beautiful Holckenhavn Castle.

From here, the route continues south along the coast. Along the way, you can take a break at Bøsøre Beach Holiday Park, where you can enjoy refreshments or spend the night close to the water.

The next stop is Hesselagergård, with its towers and red brick appearing straight out of a fairytale. The journey continues to the romantic Broholm Castle, where you can treat yourself to a stay in historic surroundings and live like royalty for a night.

The Great Belt Bridge near Nyborg

The Great Belt Bridge is an impressive sight and one of Denmark’s most iconic landmarks. From Nyborg, you can experience the vast structure connecting Funen and Zealand across the Great Belt. With its 254-metre-high pylons and a span of 1,624 metres between the towers, the East Bridge is Europe’s longest suspension bridge. Since its opening in 1997–98, the connection has made travel between the regions both faster and easier.

The market town of Nyborg

Nyborg is one of Denmark’s most important medieval towns, and its history can still be felt in the streets. At the heart of the town lies Nyborg Castle, home to the oldest preserved royal castle in the Nordic region, dating back to around 1170. The castle played a central role in medieval Denmark, and history comes alive as you walk along the green ramparts surrounding it. In recent years, the castle has undergone extensive restoration and development to strengthen its story as Denmark’s first capital.

A visit to the beautiful Church of Our Lady is also highly recommended. In summer, you can experience performances at Nyborg Voldspil, Denmark’s oldest open-air theatre, which attracts thousands of visitors each year.

Plan your visit for the first weekend of July for a truly special experience. During Danehof, Nyborg transforms into a living medieval town with knights, market stalls, music, and historical performances. The festival is considered Denmark’s most authentic medieval festival and brings the town’s proud history to life.
