More than 800 years of history within its walls

Fraugde Church was built in the 12th century as a stone church and was already considered an unusually large and significant village church in the Middle Ages. Over the centuries, the church was expanded with transepts, vaulted ceilings and a tower, creating the characteristic appearance you see today.

As you walk around the church and step inside, you can experience layer upon layer of history. This also includes the extensive restoration carried out in 2016-2017, during which the masonry, vaults, furnishings and indoor climate were carefully improved with a strong focus on preserving the church’s cultural heritage.

Wall paintings, Kingo and church art

One of the church’s most remarkable features is its Romanesque wall paintings, located around the chancel arch and triumphal wall. Dating from around 1200, they are among the best-preserved examples from this period on Funen.

The church also has a close connection to the hymn writer and bishop Thomas Kingo. Through marriage, he became the owner of Fraugdegård Manor and, consequently, the church itself. Today, his coffin rests in the church’s burial chapel beneath the epitaph he commissioned shortly before his death.

Kingo remains a visible presence in the church. The violet chasuble used for special services is inspired by his Passion hymns, and the church’s newer bell bears an inscription from one of his well-known hymns.

Morten Korch and a living cultural heritage

Fraugde Church tells more than the story of the Middle Ages. The churchyard is the final resting place of the popular author Morten Korch, and his grave continues to attract visitors who cherish his stories of the Danish countryside and rural life.
