Lillebæltstien is a beautiful walk along Lillebælt and Gamborg Fjord.

Did you know that Lillebæltstien is one of Denmark's longest continuous coastal walking routes? 27 kilometres – or 36,000 steps – can go on your step counter if you walk the full stretch from Strib in the north to Gamborg in the south.

The route takes you through shifting landscapes: sandy beaches at Strib and the white lighthouse, Middelfart town and the Hindsgavl Peninsula, where beech forest grows dense down to the water's edge. Along the way you cross coastal meadows and open stretches of coast with views across the belt.

The trail is marked with a white walker on a blue background and can be walked in either direction. You can walk the full route or break it into shorter stages – there is access to public transport at several points along the trail. With your boots laced up, you'll be done in 5.5 hours.

Along the way you also pass the old Lillebælt Bridge, which towers above the forest – a striking landmark throughout the walk along Lillebælt. At Middelfart Marina there's the option to buy food and drink, and in Middelfart town you'll find shops and cafés. If you're planning a two-day walk in Middelfart, you can stay centrally and split the route into stages of approx. 7 km (Strib – Middelfart) and approx. 20 km (Middelfart – Gamborg). The trail is well signposted and easy to follow – even without a map.

Tip: Pack a lunch. There are good rest spots with views of Lillebælt along the way.

Note: Should the weather invite a swim, bathing at the private beaches is permitted – as long as your stay is no longer than one day, you are more than 50 m from summer houses and you don't use the private bathing jetties.

Enjoy your walk!

The landowners – like the rest of Middelfart – appreciate you taking good care of the nature in the area, and ask you to:

  • Stay on the 2-metre-wide marked trail
  • Keep your dog on a lead
  • Take your litter to a bin
  • Respect the flora and fauna

Faq:

How long is Lillebæltstien, and how long does it take to walk?

Lillebæltstien is 27 km long and goes from Strib in the north to Gamborg in the south. If you walk the full stretch in one go, it takes approx. 5.5 hours. You can also split the route – e.g. Strib to Middelfart (approx. 7 km) as one stage and Middelfart to Gamborg (approx. 20 km) as another.

Is Lillebæltstien suitable for children?

The route is varied and can be adapted. The Hindsgavl Peninsula does have steep sections that require good footwear. Shorter stages – e.g. from Strib to Middelfart – are well suited for families with children. Along the way there are toilets, rest spots and the option to buy food.

When can you walk Lillebæltstien?

The route can be walked all year. Note that one short section north of Middelfart cannot be passed at high tide – there is signage here with an alternative route along the road behind.

You can find a map of the route here.
