A material narrative about the sea
An artistic perspective on the vulnerability of the sea
In the narrow, high-ceilinged space of Kunsttårn 10 on Langøvej, Britt Smelvær has created a sensory installation entitled “The sea gives – the sea takes”. The installation is constructed from colourful, discarded fishing nets collected from Bagenkop Harbour and hangs like a fabric language in the middle of the tower's raw concrete frames. The work invites reflection on humanity's interaction with the sea and the consequences this has for nature.
A lifelong artistic curiosity
For decades, Britt Smelvær has worked with experimental materials such as wood, iron, paper, fabric and natural finds, and has been active both in Denmark and in her native Norway. Her work spans graphic art, land art and large installations – always with nature and changeability as the focal point.
From installations to wall art
Now 80 years old, Smelvær also works with graphic works that can be hung up – but the experimental expression and sensuality of the material are still central. In her workshop in Vindeby, she continues to create works with life, edge and tactility – often in homemade boxes and in layers of prints, paper and found objects.
The Art Towers – Denmark's longest exhibition
Art Tower 10 is part of Langeland's spectacular art project, in which 12 former electricity towers have been transformed into art experiences. The Art Towers are free and always open, and the works are replaced on an ongoing basis. Here you will encounter art in the middle of the countryside, close to the beach, fields and villages.
Experiences nearby
Art Tower 10 is located close to Kædeby and Rudkøbing. From here, you can continue on to the Cold War Museum Langelandsfort, experience the wild horses at Dovns Klint or visit Skovsgaard Manor, which offers ecology, nature communication and hiking trails. The area is part of the UNESCO Global Geopark South Funen Archipelago.

There is no disabled access to the upper parts of the tower, but the work can be enjoyed from the ground. Public transport runs to nearby towns, from where you can walk or cycle to the tower.
