About the national route

The Baltic Sea Cycle Route (National Route 8) is Denmark’s longest national cycle route, stretching over 820 km. Along the way, you’ll discover some of Southern Denmark’s most scenic landscapes, cosy coastal towns, and unique experiences all year round.

Even outside the peak season, the route has a special charm. Here, you can get close to local life and enjoy the peace and beauty of nature in spring, autumn, and winter.

Experiences on the route

From Assens to Middelfart

Starting stage 11 in Assens, you can explore the historic market town before continuing your journey along western Funen. The Church of Our Lady in Assens, with its distinctive octagonal tower, is well worth a visit, and the harbour offers a lively maritime atmosphere with charming old streets. From here, the route heads north towards Aborg Beach – an ideal spot for a break with views of the water.

Before reaching Middelfart, you can take a detour to the Hindsgavl Peninsula, one of Denmark’s most beautiful coastal and natural areas. Here, you can experience deer park, coastline and forest in one continuous landscape. In Middelfart, you can rise high above the ground with Bridgewalking Lillebælt, enjoy the cosy town atmosphere, take a swim at the beaches or experience the town from the water on a whale watching safari in the Little Belt.

The Hindsgavl Peninsula

The Hindsgavl Peninsula is a large recreational nature area combining forest, coastline and culture. Here, you will find the Hindsgavl Deer Park Nature Park, the Hindsgavl Nature Centre and the visitor centre for Bridgewalking Lillebælt.

Take a hike “around the headland” from Old Harbour to Teglgård and across the peninsula – a route of around 10 km that takes approximately four hours. In the deer park, you can experience a large population of red and fallow deer in both woodland and open landscapes. Along the way, there is also a nature playground, a Tarzan course and the opportunity to cook over an open fire at the Nature Centre.

The Market Town of Assens

Assens is a well-preserved market town with a strong maritime history. During the Middle Ages – and until the opening of the Old Little Belt Bridge – the town was an important crossing point between Funen and Schleswig, as well as a key hub between Copenhagen and Hamburg.

The town’s history is still clearly felt today, not least at the impressive Church of Our Lady in Assens, which is the second largest church on Funen. Dive deeper into the stories at Museum Vestfyn or join a guided evening walk through the historic streets.
