St. Alban's Church

A touch of Central Europe in the heart of Odense

St. Alban's Church was built between 1906 and 1908 and stands out in the cityscape with its 54-metre tower and Neo-Gothic design. The church was designed by German architect Ludwig Schneider, and both the exterior and interior reflect architectural traditions from Central Europe.
Inside, visitors can admire colourful stained-glass windows from Bavaria, wood carvings from South Tyrol, and an organ built by the Rieger company. These details make the church an interesting destination whether your interests lie in architecture, craftsmanship, or cultural history.

A story with roots in the Viking Age

Although the present church dates from the beginning of the 20th century, the history behind the Albani name goes back much further. Close to the current church stood the original St. Alban's Church, which played an important role in the early history of Odense. It was here that King Canute IV, later known as Canute the Holy, was killed in 1086, and the area subsequently became the setting for events that helped shape medieval Odense.

Today, the original church is long gone, but its history remains visible around Albani Square, where its former location is marked. When you visit St. Alban's Church, you can explore both the city's earliest history and a striking example of early 20th-century architecture.

More than a landmark

Today, St. Alban's Church serves as Odense's Catholic church and is home to an active Catholic community. For most visitors, however, it is first and foremost a fascinating place where history, architecture, and craftsmanship come together under one roof.
